‘‘I have challenges in verbal communication, so my artwork is how I express myself. Painting and drawing give me an outlet for connecting with others’’
— Artist Clement Yang, Connecting Artist 2023
My name is Clement Yang and I am a 20-year-old artist from Taiwan with an intellectual disability. I live in Ballsbridge and attend college at the National Learning Network in Stillorgan. I have a deep passion for drawing and painting. My preferred mediums include marker pens and acrylic paints. Since I was young I have immersed myself in books on art and art history, particularly drawing inspiration from Japanese painting.
My artistic influences include figures such as Greek/Spanish painter El Greco, French painter Bernard Buffet, and renowned Irish abstract artist Sean Scully. I am inspired by my own life experiences and Taiwanese culture, focusing my recent works on native Irish animals.
I have had successful solo exhibitions in private galleries in Taipei, Tokyo, and Dublin. In 2018, I published a personal album in Taiwan, showcasing my artwork.
I have challenges in verbal communication so my artwork is how I express myself. Painting and drawing give me an outlet for connecting with others. Trying to connect with the outside world is my driving motivation with my art. I am excited about the opportunity to showcase my work and connect with other artists who, like me, have a message to convey through their art. My passion is supported by my father and my keyworker from the National Learning Network.
